A steel pickaxe is the steel pickaxe, made by smithing an iron pickaxe with steel alloy. It mines only one speed faster than iron, but its 3000 durability is six times higher, and it can mine obsidian.

The upgrade needs no template. Enchantments on the iron item carry over; where both items have the same enchantment, the higher level is kept.[1]
Usage
Mining
It breaks pickaxe blocks at speed 8. It has none of the iron pickaxe's restrictions, so it also harvests obsidian, crying obsidian and ender chests at speed 8.[2] The 1.12.1-alpha notes say only diamond, electrum and adamant can mine obsidian, but steel was left out of that rule.
The pack also makes glass, glass panes, glowstone, sea lanterns and mob heads pickaxe blocks.[3]
Combat
It deals 3 ( × 1.5) damage at an attack speed of 1.2. Steel tools reuse the removed stone tools' item IDs, so where the item sets no attack attributes of its own it keeps the stone tool's values.
Repairing
It can be repaired in an anvil with iron ingots. The pack resets repair costs to zero, so it can be repaired indefinitely; see Repairing.
Notes
- The hand-written tooltip hides the real attributes and shows attack damage 4 (real value 3).[4]
