Advancements
Advancements in Matcha Flavoured replace the whole vanilla advancement tree. They guide the player through the pack's progression, reward obols and crystal hearts, and, for seven milestones, lower the player's minimum health. The pack also uses several hundred hidden advancements internally, to trigger mechanics and unlock recipes.
When the pack loads, it tells players: "If you get lost or confused, check the advancements".[1] The README gives the same advice to players stuck in the early game.[2]
Overview
The datapack blocks the five vanilla advancement folders (story, nether, end, adventure and husbandry) through the filter in its pack.mcmeta, so none of the vanilla advancements exist.[3] The pack's own advancements are in the matcha namespace, in four visible tabs:
| Tab | Root | Background | Unlocked by | Advancements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Dirt | Joining the world | 61 (3 hidden) | |
| Hell | Hellstone | Entering Hell | 9 (1 hidden) | |
| The End | Black Concrete | Entering the End | 5 | |
| Angler's Almanac | Barrel | Obtaining the Angler's Almanac | 102 (all hidden) |
Rewards
Many advancements give a reward, and their descriptions show it as a symbol before the text:
Each coin symbol is one obol, given as an item. Larger rewards are written as a number, such as "10
".[4]- ❤ Each heart symbol is one crystal heart, given as an item. Only the four "Canto" advancements give hearts.[5]
The broken heart symbol marks a milestone that lowers the player's minimum hearts by 1. Each player's minimum starts at 10 hearts and is the lowest their maximum health can fall through death. Seven milestones carry this symbol, so completing all of them lowers the minimum to 3 hearts, the floor for Hard. On Peaceful and Easy maximum health never falls below 10 hearts, whatever the minimum. On Normal, a player whose minimum falls below 6 hearts, which happens at the fifth milestone, switches the world to Hard. Each step prints an ominous message in chat, such as "The Dead grow restless...".[6][7]
The broken-heart milestones are Brazier (copper), The Stalwart Metal (iron), The Resilient Mineral (diamond), A Zealous Alloy (electrum), A Divine Alloy (adamant), Orpheus (entering Hell) and The End of Dreams (finding a stronghold). The system rewards slow progress: a player who rushes for iron and diamonds makes their deaths more costly sooner. See Death and Difficulty.
Revocation on update
When a player joins a world after it has been updated to a newer version of the pack, their recipe unlocks are reset, so that recipes that were added or changed can be unlocked again.[8] Since 1.12.6-alpha nothing else is taken away: advancements that give rewards or affect the heart system are kept, and the player's minimum hearts are no longer reset to 10. Since 1.12.7-beta the update also sets the player's experience level to 10,000; see Anvil#Experience.[9] From 1.12.1-alpha to 1.12.5 the update also revoked most of those advancements so that they could be earned again under the new rules (sparing "No More Fish in the Sea" and "Demonic Emissary"; since 1.12.3 a shorter, hand-picked list), and by 1.12.5 it also reset the minimum to 10 hearts. See Updating items.
Tutorial
The Tutorial tab, rooted in "From Earth", traces the pack's progression in several branches: the fire, kiln and metal line that ends with alloys and smithing; a cooking line; a warding and jewelry line; the four "Canto" gem hunts; and a trading and fishing line. "From Earth" is granted on the first tick a player is in the world and runs the pack's first-load setup.[10] The requirements below are the actual criteria in the code, which are sometimes broader than the in-game description.

Angler's Almanac
The Angler's Almanac tab is a catalog of catches, added by imtlx in 1.12.1-alpha. Its root can never be completed by play. Obtaining the Angler's Almanac item runs a function that unlocks it, and every entry requires the root.[16] Each entry is hidden until the player hooks the matching item with a fishing rod, and its description gives the catch's rarity in stars. No entry gives a reward. The Hot Saltwater pufferfish entry checks for the vanilla pufferfish model, which is what a caught pufferfish has.[17] The Fish Bones entry checks for a bone, which fish bones from both the junk table and Sulfur Caves are.[18][19]
| Category | Groups | Entries |
|---|---|---|
| Freshwater | Cold, cool, temperate, hot wet, hot dry | 25 (5 each) |
| Saltwater | Cold, cool, temperate, warm, hot | 25 (5 each) |
| Swamps | — | 5 |
| Deep dark | — | 3 |
| Pale garden | — | 3 |
| Sulfur caves | — | 2 |
| Junk | — | 15 |
| Treasure | — | 7 |
The generated list of every entry is on the Angler's Almanac page.
Technical advancements
Most of the pack's advancement files have no display. They are invisible to players and act as event triggers, a common datapack technique. They are grouped by folder:[20]
| Folder | Files | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
matcha_item:trigger |
415 | The automatic item updater, added in 1.12.4: one advancement per pack item, which brings an outdated copy up to date when the player's inventory changes. See Updating items#Automatic updates. |
recipe_unlocks |
183 | Unlock recipes when the player obtains an item, for example logs unlock the kindling and chest recipes. The whole folder is revoked when the pack is updated. |
mechanics |
30 | Trigger mechanics: using a crystal heart, eating an amnestic or giving one to a villager, asylum application, beacon kindling, bedrock buster, clay fetishes or the happy ghast horn; eating glow berry foods (aura); milking a mooshroom with a bowl; sleeping; summoning the Wither; hitting a copper eye; getting the Wither, Hunger or Regeneration effect; entering a village or fortress; handling Estus and intrinsic enchantments; using an anvil, which gives experience levels. |
fishing_sounds |
11 | Play a distinct sound for each kind of catch. See Fishing sounds. |
update_old_items |
8 | Replace old copies of the sacred texts and the "Golden" music disc with current ones. See Updating items. |
cooking_recipes |
4 | Unlock secret recipes (chorus mochi, gnocchi, sweet berry toast and warped stroganoff) when their recipe item is obtained. |
particle |
2 | Particles when boarding a boat, walking on sulfurous hellstone, or drinking from an Estus flask. |
endless_repairs:inventory_changed |
1 | Reset the repair cost of items so anvil repairs never become "Too Expensive". |
anglers_almanac |
1 | Unlock the Angler's Almanac tab when the player obtains the Angler's Almanac. |
imm_revoke |
1 | |
item_contingencies |
1 | Turn unenchanted vanilla elytra into the pack's version. |
update_vanilla_item |
1 | Turn vanilla water bottles into the pack's version. |
| Total | 658 | Of 835 advancement files; the other 177 are the visible advancements. |
A trigger advancement's reward function revokes the advancement again, so that it can fire the next time.[21]
Since 1.12.6-alpha the trigger advancements in the mechanics, fishing_sounds, particle, update_old_items, item_contingencies and update_vanilla_item folders hang under matcha:imm_revoke, an advancement that can't be earned. All its children are revoked whenever the world loads or a player joins, a safety net in case a reward function fails to revoke one.[22][23] The amnestic has two of them, for eating one and for using one on a villager, which replace the single one for using it on a block.[24]
History
| 0.5-alpha | Fixed the dragon-killing advancement. |
|---|---|
| 0.6-alpha | Added "Catch Everything!" (now "No More Fish in the Sea"). |
| 0.7-alpha | Updated the preserving and cooking advancements. |
| 1.0 | Many last-minute advancement fixes. |
| 1.02 | Reworded the campfire, food, warding weapon and steel advancements, added a fishing advancement, and rearranged the tree to make progression clearer. |
| 1.03 | Added "A Brittle Alloy?", "Hidden Flavors" and "Wait, you can make that?". |
| 1.10 | Added "Demonic Emissary", "A True Community", "Icarus' Folly", "A Miraculous Discovery!", "Archeologist in Training" and "Wings of Eros". Advancements became translatable. Removed the Estus flask advancement. |
| 1.12.1-alpha | Advancements began rewarding obols and crystal hearts and lowering minimum hearts. Added "Bonfire Lit" and the Angler's Almanac tab. Reward advancements are revoked on update so they can be earned again. |
| 1.12.2 | "Bonfire Lit", "Icarus' Folly" and "Wings of Eros" can be earned; the two elytra advancements had named recipe IDs that didn't exist. The Warm Saltwater and axolotl entries of the Angler's Almanac can be unlocked.[25][26] |
| 1.12.3 | Advancements were reworked again. The revocation on update now takes away only a hand-picked list instead of most of the tutorial. "Crystal Heart!" and the pufferfish Angler's Almanac entry can be earned. The elytra translation key now exists, and the mechanics advancements that detect the Wither effect and aura foods were rewritten.[27][28] |
| 1.12.4 | Added the matcha_item:trigger advancements of the automatic item updater.[29] The advancement that applies equipment intrinsics after smithing matches the items again, so intrinsics work (see Set bonus#Applying intrinsics after smithing).[30] The junk Angler's Almanac entries other than Fish Bones can't be unlocked, because the junk loot table fails to load.
|
| 1.12.5 | The junk loot table loads again, so the junk Angler's Almanac entries for its items can be unlocked, except Fish Bones by junk catches.[31] |
| 1.12.6-alpha | Added the hidden advancement Heartbreaker. "Three in One?" gives two obols, as its description says, instead of one, and the hepatizon criteria that could never be met are removed. Updating the pack no longer revokes any reward advancements or resets minimum hearts. Trigger advancements moved under matcha:imm_revoke, and the amnestic got new ones. Fish bones from junk catches complete the Angler's Almanac's Fish Bones entry, now that they are bones.[32][33][34]
|
| 1.12.7-beta | The trigger advancement for anvils now fires when an anvil is used and sets the player's experience level to 10,000, instead of firing on every inventory change. Updating the pack sets the same level.[35][36] |
| 1.12.8-beta October 23, 2026 |
"Demonic Emissary" needs only the 17 blessings that count for "Apocrypha"; the Prayers of Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Cronus, Glaucus and Talos and the hell-bound book no longer count. The blessing recipes were renamed, and "Apocrypha" and the recipe unlocks follow the new names.[37][38] |
| 1.12.9 October 31, 2026 |
"Apocrypha" counts all 23 blessings and "Demonic Emissary" needs all 23 again, including the six that 1.12.8-beta skipped. "Unholy Knowledge" also unlocks the blessing recipes. A new trigger advancement detects eating a slice of cake.[39][40][41][42] |
Trivia
- The titles "Brilliant Bronze" and "Palatinate Perfection" keep the old names of hepatizon and shakudo. The internal IDs of the hepatizon advancements still say "bronze".
- The "Canto" titles follow The Divine Comedy, and the Hell tab's root is "Through Hell". "Orpheus" refers to the musician who descended into the underworld.
- The icon of "No More Fish in the Sea" uses a model called
gay_fish, and "A True Community" uses a heart. - A common criticism of the pack is that its advancements and systems are not explained enough. The developer disagreed and said they enjoyed watching players, who had no wiki at first, work the pack out "like a puzzle".[43]
Notes
- ↑ Until 1.12.5 the criteria also named the recipe IDs
matcha:smithing/bronze_dolabraandbronze_mattock, which do not exist (the recipes arehepatizon_dolabraandhepatizon_mattock), so smithing a hepatizon mattock or dolabra never granted it. In 1.12.6-alpha the two criteria are removed (tutorial/upgrade mattock.json). - ↑ The reward function drops an amalgamated pith at 0, 100, 0 in the End, announces "Evil has been banished from the surface." to every player, and turns on the safe-surface rule that stops hostile mobs spawning on the overworld surface. It runs once for each player who earns the advancement (
