Food

Food in Matcha Flavoured is eaten to heal and to gain effects, not to fill a hunger bar. Hunger and natural regeneration are removed, so food is the player's main source of healing, and it replaces most potions as the source of status effects. The pack adds over 90 foods, most of them cooked or crafted from a small set of ingredients whose hidden intrinsics decide which effect a dish grants.[1]
Healing

Every food heals through a hidden
Regeneration III effect that has no particles and no HUD icon. Regeneration III restores 1 health point every 12 ticks, so a food's healing is its duration divided by 12: a pumpkin empanada applies it for 96 ticks and heals 8 (
× 4).[2] A few foods (steamed golden carrots, charred meat, charred fish) use Regeneration IV for 15 ticks instead, which heals 2 (
× 1).[3]
The first line of a food's tooltip shows the healing as red hearts, one heart per 2 health points (a half heart for an odd point). The lines below it list the visible effects in the pack's tooltip style, for example
Resistance (8:00).
Because the healing is a status effect, it follows the vanilla rules for effects of the same level: eating a second food while the first one's healing is still running replaces the remaining healing only if the new duration is longer. Eating foods back to back therefore wastes part of the first one. The healing also stops if the player is already at full health.
Most foods heal between 2 (
× 1) and 12 (
× 6). The five oven meals heal 20 (
× 10), the most of any food.
Effects
Foods give most of the effects that potions give in vanilla. The effect a food carries comes from its intrinsic ingredient: every dish made with pumpkin gives
Resistance, every dish made with carrots gives
Night Vision, and so on. The more work goes into a dish, the longer the effect lasts. See Intrinsic for the full table.
Some foods have other effects:
- Cleanse maleffect (bread, honey ginger tea, ice cream): removes Poison, Mining Fatigue, Wither, Weakness, Bad Omen, Blindness, Darkness, Infested, Weaving, Nausea, Oozing and Slowness.[4]
- Cleanse (milk bottle): removes all effects, like a milk bucket.[5]
- Aura (glow berry mash, glow berry jam, glow berry crumble): makes nearby creatures glow. See Glow Berries.
- Warping (chorus fruit): teleports the player randomly, as in vanilla.
- Throwable: bubbling mead, pickled toadstools, pickled crimson fungus and pickled warped fungus are splash potions instead of food, and apply their effect to everything they hit.
Kinds of food

The developer groups the dishes of each ingredient into three steps:[6]
- Simple preparation
- The ingredient cooked on its own in an oven or on kindling, such as baked pumpkin or steamed carrots. It heals 2 (
× 1) to 4 (
× 2) and "awakens" the intrinsic for a few seconds, which mostly hints at what the ingredient does. - Preservation
- A jam, pickle, can or drink crafted from the cooked ingredient, sugar or a brown mushroom and a glass bottle, such as pumpkin jam. The effect lasts a few minutes. Eating it gives the glass bottle back.
- Meal
- A crafted dish, usually with dough, estus ash and sugar, such as pumpkin empanada. The effect lasts 5 to 20 minutes and it heals more.
Beyond these, the pack has:
- Oven meals
- Green curry, Japanese curry, paneer makhani, tonkotsu ramen and pumpkin curry. Their stocks are crafted and then cooked for 15 seconds. They heal 20 (
× 10) and give an effect for 20 or 30 minutes. - Plain foods
- Foods without an effect that are mostly healing: bread, baked potato, cheese, chicken nuggets, stroganoff, gnocchi, latke, fish and chips and cooked meat.
- Secret foods
- Foods whose recipes never appear in the recipe book. See Secret recipes.
Meat has no intrinsic. Cooked meat heals 4 (
× 2) and has no effect, which is meant to discourage mob farms.[7]
Obtaining
Most food is cooked in an oven, on kindling or soul kindling, or crafted at a crafting table. See Cooking for the stations, cooking times and how recipes are unlocked. Food also appears in chest loot, and the Cook villager sells a few secret dishes.
Several vanilla foods are replaced by the pack's versions when they're obtained:
- Apples dropped by leaves, carrots, tomatoes, glow berries, sweet berries, melon slices and chorus fruit from their crops, and food in chest loot, come from the pack's loot tables with its tooltips and healing.[8]
- A plain apple or sweet berries without a tooltip (for example from another mod or datapack) are swapped for the pack's version one at a time when they enter the inventory of a player outside Creative mode.[9]
Vanilla recipes for mushroom stew, rabbit stew, beetroot soup, suspicious stew, pumpkin pie, cookies, cake, bread, golden apples, golden carrots, glistering melon slices and all vanilla cooking recipes for meat, fish, potatoes and kelp are removed.[10] Several of those items are reused as the pack's foods; see Renamed items.
Usage
Favorite food
Every employed villager that has traded at least once is given one extra trade: it buys 1 of a random food, chosen from 42 of the pack's dishes, for 1 obol, once.[11] The list covers most meals and all five oven meals.
Glass bottles and bowls
Foods eaten from a bottle (jams, pickles, cans, mead, melon sorbet, honey ginger tea, milk bottles) give back a glass bottle. Stews, stroganoff, gnocchi, ice cream and the oven meals give back a bowl. Crafting most recipes that use a milk bottle, oil or a water bottle also returns the glass bottles: a hidden advancement gives the player 1 glass bottle per craft, or 2 for the green curry, paneer and pumpkin curry stocks. Three of the four stroganoff recipes aren't in the list, and the cheese recipe is listed under an outdated ID (main:food/crafting/cheese) that no longer matches it, so their milk bottle's glass bottle is lost.[12]
List of foods
The table lists every item with a food component, including fish, which belong to the fishing system. "Heals" counts the hidden Regeneration III only.

History
| 0.5-alpha | Added cooked pufferfish and fried eggs. Golden apples got a proper tooltip and texture. Glow berry jam gives its glass bottle back when eaten. |
|---|---|
| 0.6-alpha | Raw and cooked morsel renamed to raw and cooked flesh. Tomato soup renamed to grilled tomatoes and pickled tomatoes to sun-dried tomatoes. All foods now either always or never show consume particles. |
| 0.7-alpha | Added six secret foods, flour, bag of flour, the brown and red mushroom foods and cake healing. Preserves and meals now use the cooked ingredient (for example baked apples instead of apples). All foods show their effect icon. Mushroom stew, suspicious stew and pumpkin pie recipes removed. |
| 1.0 | Bread in chests is now the same as crafted bread. |
| 1.10 | Added pizzas, Kontomire-Dandelion Stew, Pad Thai and a secret food. All food except curries cooks faster in the oven. Removed leftover recipes from earlier versions (squid ink pasta, golden pie and others). |
| 1.12.1-alpha | Added pumpkin curry, oil, seitan, chicken nuggets, nopales, bubbling mead, fish and chips, ice cream, lumpia, apple cinnamon oatmeal and buñuelos. All foods got translatable names and tooltips, so foods made before this version no longer stack with new ones. Curries and ramen got vegetarian options. |
Trivia
- The developer named Breath of the Wild as the inspiration for predictable ingredient effects.[13]
- Most of the pack's foods are custom-named poisonous potatoes with their own model. Intermediates that shouldn't be edible, such as dough and flour, are spawn eggs instead, because spawn eggs can't be eaten.[14]
