Intrinsic

An intrinsic is a special ability hidden in an item. For food, it is the status effect that an ingredient carries: raw, the ingredient does nothing special, but cooking it "awakens" the intrinsic, and every dish made from it grants the same effect for longer the more work goes into it.[1] Pumpkin, for example, has no effect on its own, but baked pumpkin gives
Resistance for 30 seconds, pumpkin jam for 3 minutes and a pumpkin empanada for 8 minutes.
The pack also uses the word for the built-in abilities of equipment, such as the warding of silver weapons or the knockback of mattocks. Those are covered on the pages of the equipment and on Set bonus; this page covers ingredients.
Mechanics
Each intrinsic ingredient has at least three dishes:[2]
- A simple preparation: the ingredient cooked alone in an oven or on kindling. Its effect lasts 3 to 30 seconds, and it mostly tells the player what the ingredient does.
- A preservation: a jam, pickle, can or drink crafted from the ingredient and a glass bottle. Its effect lasts 3 to 5 minutes.
- A meal: a crafted dish, which lasts longest and heals the most.
Some ingredients have further dishes, and pumpkin is also the key ingredient of an oven meal that lasts 20 minutes. The effect doesn't depend on anything else in the recipe: meat, bread, cheese, dough and the other base ingredients have no intrinsic, so a dish only gains an effect from its intrinsic ingredients. A few dishes combine two, such as lumpia (carrot and kelp) or warped pizza (warped fungus and tomatoes).
The pack's README counts "12 food ingredients" with intrinsics, and the developer described two more as "secret ingredients" whose foods are hidden from the recipe book.[3][4] The golden versions of apples and carrots are hidden variants of their ingredients.
Ingredients
Durations are the effect's duration at level I unless a level is given. Every dish also heals; see each page or the food table.
Two more ingredients with effects:
- Pufferfish gives
Conduit Power: cooked pufferfish (0:30) and bokguk (8:00). See Fish. - Honey's simple preparation and bread also have the cleansing effect; see Food.
Ingredients without an intrinsic are used for healing and as bases: potatoes, brown mushrooms, eggs, wheat, cactus, sugar and meat. Brown mushrooms are the pickling agent of every pickle.
Secret ingredients
These ingredients' dishes never appear in the recipe book; see Secret recipes.

Oven meals
There are five oven meals. Each is crafted as a stock and cooked for 15 seconds, heals 20 (
× 10) and gives the strongest version of its effect.[5]
| Meal | Stock | Intrinsic ingredients in the stock | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green Curry Stock | — | ||
| Curry Stock | Carrot | ||
| Paneer Curry Stock | Tomatoes | ||
| Ramen Stock | Kelp | ||
| Pumpkin Curry Stock | Baked Pumpkin, carrot |
Unlike other dishes, the oven meals' effects are set per meal rather than by their ingredients: only pumpkin curry's effect matches an ingredient's intrinsic. Japanese curry contains carrots but gives Strength, paneer makhani contains tomatoes but gives Regeneration, and tonkotsu ramen contains kelp but gives Haste.[6]
History
| 0.7-alpha | Preserves and meals now require the cooked ingredient (for example baked apples instead of apples). |
|---|---|
| 1.12.1-alpha | Baked pumpkin's Resistance extended from 10 seconds to 30 seconds. Pad Thai's Night Vision extended from 5:00 to 10:00. Pickled warped fungus became throwable. |
Trivia
- The developer took the idea of predictable ingredient effects from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.[7]
- The developer's examples of planning with intrinsics: melons before a trip to Hell, glow berries or carrots for caving, and chorus fruit for The End.[8]
