A bedrock buster is a special charge of TNT that destroys bedrock, trial spawners and vaults. Placed on a block, it becomes a glowing primed TNT, and just before it explodes it clears a 3×7×3 column of these blocks around itself, letting players break through the floor of the Overworld or the roof and floor of Hell.

Each bedrock buster costs  Pith, the pack's scarcest progression material.

Usage

The bedrock buster is a spawn egg that holds a primed TNT entity. Using it on a block:

1. spawns a primed, glowing TNT with an 80-tick (4-second) fuse and explosion power 4;
2. 79 ticks later, at every glowing TNT with 2 ticks of fuse left, removes every bedrock block, trial spawner and vault in a 3×7×3 area centered on the TNT (1 block to each side horizontally, 3 blocks up and down) and releases a burst of end rod particles;
3. the TNT then explodes normally one tick later, damaging the surrounding blocks and entities.

The removal is triggered by an advancement when the buster is used on a block. Each use schedules its own removal, so several busters used in quick succession each clear their own column.

The 1.12.9 release notes give the reason trial spawners and vaults were added: "In case you want to live in an Abbey's basement".

Spawners

Because it is a spawn egg, using a bedrock buster on a spawner counts as putting a spawn egg on it: every spawner and trial spawner within 16 blocks is destroyed and the player takes 1 damage (20 until 1.12.8-beta).

1.12.9 October 31, 2026	Bedrock busters also destroy trial spawners and vaults. Several busters used within 79 ticks now each clear their own column; before, only the last use's removal ran, at the glowing TNT nearest the world spawn.

Trivia

• The item is a chicken spawn egg with a custom model.
• In the design video, bedrock busters are listed among the items that need a divine fragment (now pith), as part of the reasoning against building mob farms: "If you want to make an unbreaking book, Bedrock Busters, Crystal Hearts, or netherite, you need that fragment."
