Defined inanglers_almanac.json

The Angler's Almanac is a book sold by the Fisherman. Having it unlocks the Angler's Almanac advancement tab: a catalog of everything that can be caught by fishing, sorted by climate. Each entry appears when its catch is first reeled in. The item and the tab were made by the community contributor Imtlx.[1]

Obtaining

Trading

A Novice Fisherman sells the almanac for 1 Obol. The trade has 999 uses and gives the Fisherman 10 experience.[2]

Chance is the probability that a single chest, mob or catch yields at least one, assuming no Looting, Luck or Fortune.

Usage

The almanac is a vanilla book with its own name, texture and tooltip ("Discover the fish that inhabit this world"). It does nothing when used. As soon as it enters the player's inventory, the hidden advancement anglers_almanac/get_almanac fires and grants the root of the almanac tab.[3][4] The tab stays unlocked afterward, even if the book is lost.

The advancement tab

The tab's root can't be earned any other way (its criterion is minecraft:impossible). Once it is granted, the category pages unlock on the next tick. Every entry is hidden until completed and doesn't announce in chat, but shows a toast.[5]

Entries are completed by reeling in the matching item with a fishing rod, and only count while the player already has the tab. Catches from before the almanac was obtained aren't recorded. Each fish entry shows the almanac's flavor description, the fish's rarity and a listed chance within its category. A category's entries are chained from the most common catch to the rarest.

Category Contents
Cold, Cool, Temperate, Arid and Tropical Freshwater 5 fish each. The category's description lists its biomes.
Cold, Cool, Temperate, Warm and Hot Saltwater 5 fish each
Brackish The 5 swamp fish
Pale Garden Creaking Fish, pale hanging moss, resin clump
Deep Dark Echo Eel, sculk vein, echo shard
Sulfur Caves Fish Bones, Sulfur Chunk
Junk 15 junk items, including Axolotl, Frog and Tadpole
Treasure Obol, enchanted fishing rod, Hell-Bound Book, goat horn, angler pottery sherd, Crystal Heart, chest

Discrepancies

  • The junk category has entries for a bowl and a tripwire hook, but neither is in the current fishing junk table, so the tab can't be fully completed.[6][7]
  • The listed chances don't always match the loot tables. The Creaking Fish is listed at 25% of Pale Garden catches but has 17.95%, and the junk percentages come from an older junk table.
  • The Cool Freshwater biome list leaves out Dark Forest and Old Growth Spruce Taiga, which are in the loot tag.[8]
  • Any bone reeled in completes the Fish Bones entries.

History

1.12.1-alpha Added.
1.12.2 Fixed the tropical fish entries, which couldn't be unlocked.
