Wither effect

This is the Matcha Flavoured version of Wither, renamed or changed from vanilla Minecraft.
Wither
Harmful; takes maximum health
TypeStatus effect

The Wither effect in Matcha Flavoured still deals vanilla damage over time, but a player who stays withered for 8 seconds also loses maximum health, exactly as if they had died. Easy difficulty is exempt. The effect is applied by wither skeletons, the Wither and wither roses, so Hell fortresses and the Wither fight can cost hearts without the player dying.

Mechanics

Whenever a player's effects change, the pack starts tracking them unless the world is on Easy.[1] Once a second, for each tracked player:[2]

  • If they no longer have the Wither effect, tracking stops and the count resets.
  • If they are still withered, the count goes up by 1, an experience pickup sound plays, and a meter in the action bar fills up.
  • When the count reaches 8, the Wither effect is removed, the player loses maximum health as if they had died, a quiet totem sound plays, and the player takes a tiny amount of damage (0.1) so the hit registers.

The meter is shown with the pack's own glyphs: a Wither icon followed by a bar that fills over the 8 seconds.

Hearts lost

The heart loss uses the same function as a death:[3]

Difficulty Maximum health lost
Easy none (not tracked)
Normal (and Peaceful) 2 (Heart × 1)
Hard 4 (Heart × 2)

The loss is limited by the player's minimum hearts, like any death. See Death#Minimum hearts.

Curing

The meter resets as soon as the effect is gone, so any cure used before the eighth second prevents the heart loss:

  • Milk removes all effects.
  • Bread and other foods with the Cleanse Cleanse Maleffect tooltip remove Wither along with other harmful effects.[4]

The 1.12.2 release notes ask players to "bring milk or bread to Hell, please its very important".[5]

History

1.12.2 The Wither effect now takes hearts after 8 seconds, except on Easy. The Shakudo chestplate no longer cleanses Wither.

Trivia

  • The developer's plans describe this as "Wither removing hearts on hit", part of making hearts easier to lose late in the game for experienced players, inspired by an attack in the Ganon fight in Tears of the Kingdom that removes a heart "WITHOUT killing them".[6]
  • The pack's code calls this mechanic "Heartbreaker".[7]
