An Amnestic is an item that makes a villager forget its profession. Its tooltip reads "Causes a villager to forget who they are" and "Place on the ground next to them". It exists so that villagers can pick up new trades when an update of the pack changes them.[1]

The recipe is unlocked by picking up glowstone dust.[2] Amnestics stack to 64.[3]

Usage

Using an Amnestic on a block places an invisible marker there. The pack then finds the villager nearest to that spot and:[4]

  • sets its profession to none and its level to 1 (Novice), which removes its trades;
  • resets its restock timer;
  • clears its favorite food flag, so it will be given a new favorite food.

The marker is then removed. The villager is chosen by distance alone, with no range limit, so the Amnestic should be placed right next to the intended villager.

The villager's experience is not reset. It becomes unemployed and can take any profession from a nearby job site block, starting at Novice with the current trade lists. Because vanilla villagers gain only one level per trade, a villager that already has a lot of experience climbs back up one level each time the player trades with it, and only unlocks the next level's trades after that trade.[5]

Behavior

The Amnestic is a chicken spawn egg that places an invisible armor stand instead of a chicken. As with other spawn eggs, using it on a spawner or trial spawner in Survival destroys every spawner within 16 blocks and deals 20 damage to the player.[6]

History

1.10 Added.
1.12.2 No longer resets the villager's experience.

Trivia

  • The recipe uses an azure bluet, and the 1.10 release notes call the item "a little forget-me-not".
  • The item's model is named amnestic_wrapped.
