Hell is the name Matcha Flavoured gives to the Nether. The pack renames the dimension's blocks and items to match: netherrack is Hellstone, Nether bricks are Hellbricks, Nether wart is Hellspore, Nether gold ore is Gilded Hellstone and Nether quartz ore is Sulfurous Hellstone. Entering it grants the advancement "Orpheus" ("Descend into Hell").
In the pack's progression, Hell is where Blessings and Hell-Bound Books are made from stolen prayers, and where adamant scrap is found in Bastion Remnants. The Wither effect is especially dangerous there, and the release notes urge players to "bring milk or bread to Hell".
Environment
The pack overrides Hell's dimension type:[1]
| Property | Matcha Flavoured | Vanilla |
|---|---|---|
| Ambient light | 0.3 | 0.1 |
| Fog start distance | 0 blocks | 10 blocks |
| Fog end distance | 300 blocks | 96 blocks |
| Water evaporates | No | Yes |
The higher ambient light makes dark areas less dark, while the fog starts at the player and reaches much farther.
Water
Although the dimension type no longer evaporates water, water cannot be kept inside Hell. Whenever a player empties a water bucket while in Hell between Y=0 and Y=127, the pack removes all water in a cube reaching 20 blocks from the player in every direction. The fill covers more blocks than the vanilla limit for one command, but the pack raises the max_block_modifications game rule to 200,000, so it succeeds.[2][3][4] Water can be placed on the Nether roof (Y=128 and above). The developer disabled evaporation so that flowers and plants can grow in Hell.[5]
Generation
- No gravel: the Hell noise settings no longer place gravel on the surface of Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valleys and Basalt Deltas, and the
ore_gravel_netherfeature is removed from Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valleys, Crimson Forests and Warped Forests.[6] - Hellspore: patches of Hellspore at random growth stages generate on soul sand in Nether Wastes and Soul Sand Valleys.[7]
- Soul Sand Valleys have a darker fog (
#061919) and sky (#030d0d). Crimson Forests have fewer floating spores, and Warped Forests have a pale blue fog (#a2b5dd). See Biomes#Changes by biome.
Structures

|---|---|
| 0.7-alpha | All "Nether" names changed to "Hell". |
| 1.10 | Water can no longer be placed inside Hell. |

| 1.12.2 | Nether portals are purple. |
Trivia
- "Hell is too dark" was one of the most common complaints. The developer agreed only in part, saying they like dark Nethers and treating it as a matter of taste; the 1.12 increase in ambient light was a compromise.[8]
