Defined inobol_1.json

An obol is the currency of trading in Matcha Flavoured. Obols replace emeralds: they are the same item, renamed and retextured, but they are much rarer, because villagers no longer buy everyday goods.

The developer explains the change in the introduction video: "Obols are the same as emeralds, but much harder to come across. Partially due to their overall rarity in chests, but also because villagers no longer buy anything from players. No mob grinders or fully automated melon farms can make you rich."[1]

Advancements

37 advancements reward obols, 86 in total. Most give 1 obol; the largest rewards are 10 obols.[2] From 1.12.1-alpha to 1.12.5, most advancements that reward obols were revoked when the pack updated, so their rewards could be earned again (No More Fish in the Sea, Demonic Emissary and Iconoclast were kept); since 1.12.6-alpha updating revokes none of them.[3][4]

Trading

Only a few trades pay obols:

Usage

Obols are the price of almost every villager and wandering trader trade. See Trading and the profession pages.

Crafting ingredient

Name Ingredients
Block of Obol Block of Obol 9 obols
Beacon Kindling Beacon Kindling Obol, Kindling and hay bale
Prayer of St. Clement 2 obols, leather boots, 2 wool and a Hell-Bound Book

Trim material

As an armor trim material, the obol is called "Patina Material".[5]

Advancements

  • You're Rich!: "Obtain an Obol". It is the parent of the Bonfire Lit advancement for the Beacon Kindling, whose recipe also unlocks on picking up an obol.[6]

History

1.10 Husks drop obols about 10% of the time, compared with about 5% for zombies.

Skeleton and bogged obol drop rates reduced to match other mobs. Trial chamber pots give fewer obols.

1.12.1-alpha Obols no longer drop from undead mobs.

Advancements reward obols.

Issues

  • The 1.12.1-alpha and 1.12.3 release notes say obols no longer drop from undead mobs ("Mobs no longer drop obols"), but the bogged and zombie villager loot tables still drop an obol about 9% of the time when killed by a player.[7][8]

Trivia

  • The developer on the rename: "Emeralds have been renamed to obols because I like that more."[9]
  • The Angler's Almanac describes the obol as "An ancient coin dredged from the depths. Either treasure or someone's very expensive mistake."
  • Emerald ore is renamed Native Silver, so it no longer relates to obols by name.
