Advancements
Advancements in Matcha Flavoured replace the whole vanilla advancement tree. They guide the player through the pack's progression, reward obols and crystal hearts, and, for seven milestones, lower the player's minimum health. The pack also uses several hundred hidden advancements internally, to trigger mechanics and unlock recipes.
When the pack loads, it tells players: "If you get lost or confused, check the advancements".[1] The README gives the same advice to players stuck in the early game.[2]
Overview
The datapack blocks the five vanilla advancement folders (story, nether, end, adventure and husbandry) through the filter in its pack.mcmeta, so none of the vanilla advancements exist.[3] The pack's own advancements are in the matcha namespace, in four visible tabs:
| Tab | Root | Background | Unlocked by | Advancements |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Dirt | Joining the world | 61 (3 hidden) | |
| Hell | Hellstone | Entering Hell | 8 | |
| The End | End Portal Frame.png: Inventory sprite for End Portal Frame in Minecraft as shown in-game with description: End Portal Frame To Dreams | Black concrete | Entering the End | 5 |
| Angler's Almanac | Barrel | Obtaining the Angler's Almanac | 102 (all hidden until earned) |
Rewards
Many advancements give a reward, and their descriptions show it as a symbol before the text:
Each coin symbol is one obol, given as an item. Larger rewards are written as a number, such as "10
".[4]- ❤ Each heart symbol is one crystal heart, given as an item. Only the four "Canto" advancements give hearts.[5]
The broken heart symbol marks a milestone that lowers the player's minimum hearts by 1. Each player's minimum starts at 10 hearts and is the lowest their maximum health can fall through death. Seven milestones carry this symbol, so completing all of them lowers the minimum to 3 hearts, the floor for Hard. On Easy the minimum is always 10 hearts. On Normal, a player whose minimum falls below 6 hearts, which happens at the fifth milestone, switches the world to Hard. Each step prints an ominous message in chat, such as "The Dead grow restless...".[6][7]
The broken-heart milestones are Brazier (copper), The Stalwart Metal (iron), The Resilient Mineral (diamond), A Zealous Alloy (electrum), A Divine Alloy (adamant), Orpheus (entering Hell) and The End of Dreams (finding a stronghold). The system rewards slow progress: a player who rushes for iron and diamonds makes their deaths more costly sooner. See Death and Difficulty.
Revocation on update
When a player joins a world after it has been updated to a newer version of the pack, their recipe unlocks are reset, along with most advancements that give rewards or affect the heart system, so that they can be earned again under the new rules. "No More Fish in the Sea" and "Demonic Emissary" are deliberately kept, and the player's minimum hearts reset to 10.[8] See Updating items.
Tutorial
The Tutorial tab, rooted in "From Earth", traces the pack's progression in several branches: the fire, kiln and metal line that ends with alloys and smithing; a cooking line; a warding and jewelry line; the four "Canto" gem hunts; and a trading and fishing line. "From Earth" is granted on the first tick a player is in the world and runs the pack's first-load setup.[9] The requirements below are the actual criteria in the code, which are sometimes broader than the in-game description.

Angler's Almanac
The Angler's Almanac tab is a catalogue of catches, added by imtlx in 1.12.1-alpha. Its root can never be completed by play. Obtaining the Angler's Almanac item runs a function that unlocks it, and every entry requires the root.[10] Each entry is hidden until the player hooks the matching item with a fishing rod, and its description gives the catch's rarity in stars. No entry gives a reward.
| Category | Groups | Entries |
|---|---|---|
| Freshwater | Cold, cool, temperate, hot wet, hot dry | 25 (5 each) |
| Saltwater | Cold, cool, temperate, warm, hot | 25 (5 each) |
| Swamps | — | 5 |
| Deep dark | — | 3 |
| Pale garden | — | 3 |
| Sulfur caves | — | 2 |
| Junk | — | 15 |
| Treasure | — | 7 |
The generated list of every entry is on the Angler's Almanac page.
Technical advancements
Most of the pack's 414 advancement files have no display. They are invisible to players and act as event triggers, a common datapack technique. They are grouped by folder:[11]
| Folder | Files | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
recipe_unlocks |
180 | Unlock recipes when the player obtains an item, for example logs unlock the kindling and chest recipes. The whole folder is revoked when the pack is updated. |
mechanics |
25 | Trigger mechanics: using a crystal heart, amnestic, asylum application, beacon kindling, bedrock buster, clay fetishes or the happy ghast horn; eating glow berry foods (soul sight); sleeping; summoning the Wither; hitting a copper eye; getting the Wither effect; entering a village or fortress; handling Estus and intrinsic enchantments. |

Trivia
- The titles "Brilliant Bronze" and "Palatinate Perfection" keep the old names of hepatizon and shakudo. The internal IDs of the hepatizon advancements still say "bronze".
- The "Canto" titles follow The Divine Comedy, and the Hell tab's root is "Through Hell". "Orpheus" refers to the musician who descended into the underworld.
- The icon of "No More Fish in the Sea" uses a model called
gay_fish, and "A True Community" uses a heart. - The Hepatizon Elytra's name uses the translation key
item.kleispack.hepatizon_elytra, which is missing from the language file (onlyitem.kleispack.bronze_elytraexists), so the smithed item shows its raw key in game.[12] - A common criticism of the pack is that its advancements and systems are not explained enough. The developer disagreed and said they enjoyed watching players, who had no wiki at first, work the pack out "like a puzzle".[13]
Notes
- ↑ The criteria for hepatizon use the recipe IDs
matcha:smithing/bronze_dolabraandbronze_mattock, which do not exist; the recipes are namedhepatizon_dolabraandhepatizon_mattock. Smithing a hepatizon mattock or dolabra therefore does not grant this advancement (tutorial/upgrade mattock.json). - ↑ The reward function drops a divine favor at 0, 100, 0 in the End, announces "Evil has been banished from the surface." to every player, and turns on the safe-surface rule that stops hostile mobs spawning on the overworld surface. It runs once for each player who earns the advancement (
mechanics/first dragon killed reward.mcfunction).
