A pufferfish is a common ⭐☆☆☆ fish caught by fishing in hot saltwater. It is the vanilla pufferfish with a rarity line. It cooks into cooked pufferfish, and a Fisherman buys 12 caught pufferfish for an Obol.

The pufferfish can be caught in this table.[1] The chances are per cast of a fishing rod and include the junk and treasure rolls.

The same tables are also rolled by the drops of guardians and elder guardians, using the biome where the mob dies.

Chance is the probability that a single chest, mob or catch yields at least one, assuming no Looting, Luck or Fortune.

Usage

Food

The pufferfish keeps the vanilla pufferfish's effects when eaten raw:  Poison II for 1:00,  Hunger III for 0:15 and  Nausea for 0:15. It heals nothing. Cooking it into cooked pufferfish removes the poison and adds Conduit Power.

The recipes match any minecraft:pufferfish, so every pufferfish gives the same result.[2] A Mud Kiln burns it into charred fish instead.

Trading

The Fisherman buys 12 caught pufferfish for 1 Obol once he reaches Apprentice level. Only fish with the ⭐☆☆☆ rarity line, which the fishing loot tables add, are accepted.[3]

Angler's Almanac

The Angler's Almanac has an entry for the pufferfish under Hot Saltwater (listed chance 35.7%), meant to unlock when one is caught after the player has obtained the almanac.[4] Through 1.12.2 it couldn't be unlocked: the entry checked for the model matcha:pufferfish, but caught pufferfish keep the vanilla model. It now checks for the vanilla model.[5] Its description reads:

A normally small fish that turns into a spiky balloon the moment things get awkward.

0.5-alpha Fishing overhauled into climates with star-rated fish.
1.10 The Fisherman now buys 12 instead of 24.

The item format changed; fish caught before this version can no longer be sold.

1.12.3 Fixed the Hot Saltwater Angler's Almanac entry, which couldn't be unlocked.[6]
