The Abbey is a large ruined dungeon structure added by Matcha Flavoured. It consists of an overgrown tower on the surface and a maze of trial rooms, puzzle rooms and reward rooms deep underground, connected by doors and grates that open when a copper eye is shot. The developer describes it as "the bastion of the overworld": where the Bastion Remnant supplies adamant scrap, the Abbey supplies silver.[1]
The Abbey is a late-mid to late-game dungeon. The release notes recommend full diamond gear and good food, and advise against steel armor because its blast resistance "makes the dungeon boring".[2]
Generation
The only Abbey variant is the Overgrown Abbey (structure ID minecraft:abbey_overgrown, map name "Overgrown Abbey Map"). The pack's code also contains the pieces for a "default" abbey, but these are used only as the underground part of the overgrown one.
Abbeys generate in Forest and Dark Forest biomes.[3] Placement uses the structure set minecraft:abbey:[4]
- Random spread with a spacing of 60 chunks and a separation of 40 chunks (salt 10187261). At most one Abbey can generate in each 60 × 60 chunk (960 × 960 block) region, and two Abbeys are always at least 40 chunks apart.
- An exclusion zone keeps Abbeys at least 16 chunks away from any village.
The structure is a jigsaw structure with a maximum depth of 20 pieces, a maximum horizontal distance of 116 blocks from its start and beard_thin terrain adaptation.[5] Its first piece, the tower, is placed 10 blocks below the surface (the MOTION_BLOCKING_NO_LEAVES heightmap), so its lower floors are buried.
Abbeys can be found with an Overgrown Abbey Map, which the Archaeologist sells at level 3 in exchange for The Divine Comedy or Paradise Lost. See Explorer maps.[6] They can also be located with /locate structure minecraft:abbey_overgrown.
Structure
An Abbey is assembled from template pieces joined by jigsaw blocks. The pieces are chosen from these template pools:[7]
| Pool | Pieces (weight) | Role |
|---|---|---|
abbey/overgrown/tower |
tower | Surface tower; the structure's start. |
abbey/default/entrances |
entrance_0 | Shaft from the bottom of the tower to the dungeon. |
abbey/default/entrance_rooms |
tutorial | First room of the dungeon. |
abbey/default/dungeon_rooms |
waterfall (1), quad_spawn_walkways (3), spider_triple_walkway (3), drawbridge (3), water_and_lava (3) | Combat rooms. |
abbey/default/puzzle_rooms |
hallway_pitfall, lantern_drop, decision_puzzle, bath, jump_puzzle (1 each) | Puzzle rooms. |
abbey/default/boon_rooms |
boon_checkpoint, boon_vault, boon_heart (1 each) | Small dead-end reward rooms. |
The layout follows this chain:
- The tower (21 × 48 × 23 blocks) stands on the surface. Its bottom jigsaw connects down to the entrance shaft.
- The entrance (30 × 48 × 13) is a 48-block-deep shaft with a bubble column over soul sand to carry the player back up, and a copper eye door and several copper eye grates. A crystal heart lies on a ledge inside it.
- The tutorial room (35 × 16 × 35) is the hub of the dungeon. It holds five trial spawners, connects to reward rooms on its east and west sides, to puzzle rooms on its upper east and west sides, and to a combat room to the south.
- Combat rooms connect onward to puzzle rooms and reward rooms, and puzzle rooms connect back to combat rooms, so the dungeon branches until the depth limit or the 116-block radius is reached.
- Reward rooms ("boons") are 5 × 7 × 7 dead ends.
Several jigsaw blocks in the combat rooms point to a pool named abbey/default/dungeon, and the tutorial room's entrance connector points to abbey/default/entrace_rooms. Neither pool exists, so those connectors never generate anything.[8]

Block processors
Placeholder blocks in the templates are replaced when the structure generates. Each placeholder's rules are checked in order and the first one that succeeds is used, so the effective chances are lower than the listed chance for later rules.[9][10]
| Placeholder | Underground rooms (abbey_dungeon) |
Tower (abbey_tower)
|
|---|---|---|
| Magenta glazed terracotta | 30% cobweb, otherwise air | Same |
| Yellow glazed terracotta | 25% cracked decorated pot (Abbey pot loot); 25% flower pot; 6.25% vault; 25% cobweb; otherwise air. Effective: pot 25%, flower pot 18.8%, vault 3.5%, cobweb 13.2%, air 39.5%. | 20.3% cracked decorated pot; 20.3% flower pot; 12.5% skeleton skull; 6.25% vault; 20.3% cobweb; otherwise air |
| Brown glazed terracotta | 50% cracked decorated pot; 30% flower pot; otherwise air (effective 50%, 15%, 35%) | 33% cracked decorated pot; 21% flower pot; otherwise air |
| Tuff bricks | 65% stone bricks; 15% cracked stone bricks; otherwise mossy stone bricks | Stone |
| Polished tuff | Andesite | Andesite |
| Orange glazed terracotta | Vault | — |
| Cyan glazed terracotta | Ominous vault | — |
| Blue glazed terracotta | 30% Native Deepslate Silver, otherwise deepslate | — |
| Pink glazed terracotta | 30% Native Silver, otherwise stone | — |
Vaults created by a processor have no configuration, so they use the vanilla default: they open with a Trial Key and give chests/trial_chambers/reward loot. The two ominous vaults placed in the templates (boon vault and jump puzzle) open with an Ominous Trial Key and give chests/trial_chambers/reward_ominous loot. See Trial Chambers#Loot for these tables.
Copper eyes
The dungeon's doors, grates and hanging lanterns are controlled by copper eyes (target blocks). Shooting a copper eye with any projectile opens the iron-bar door below it, slides or lifts its copper grate, or drops its lantern. Each copper eye works once.
Warding stones
A warding stone cannot be placed in an Abbey (or in Trial Chambers). If a player tries, the stone explodes like TNT with no fuse.[11]
Loot
Tower chests
The trapped chest at the top of the tower uses chests/abbey/tower. It always contains The Tanakh or The Quran and has a 50% chance of a crystal heart.

Other
- Vaults: see Trial Chambers#Loot.
- Trial spawners drop keys from
spawners/trial_chamber/key: an 80% chance of a trial key and a 20% chance of an ominous trial key per key drop.[12] - A crystal heart item lies in the entrance shaft and in the heart boon room; silver bullion lies in the checkpoint boon room.
Mobs
Warding has no effect on undead wearing copper armor, which makes the armored skeletons and zombies of the Abbey dangerous even to warded players.
| Room | Spawner | Mob |
|---|---|---|
| Tutorial | Trial spawner "Buff Copper Skeletons" (×2) | Skeleton in a full copper armor set with a bow with Power I and Punch I |
| Trial spawner "Buff Stay" | Stray with an iron helmet, copper chestplate, leggings and boots and a bow with Power II and Punch I | |
| Trial spawner (×2) | Spider | |

| Drawbridge | Trial spawner | Cave Spider |
| Trial spawner | Skeleton | |
| Trial spawner (×2) | Zombie | |
| Trial spawner | Zombie in a full copper armor set with an iron spear | |
| Water and lava | Trial spawner | Copper-armored skeleton |
| Trial spawner | Blaze | |
| Waterfall | Monster spawner (×8) | 6 Skeleton, 2 Husk |
| Lantern drop | Trial spawner | Zombie |
| Decision puzzle | Trial spawner | Cave Spider |
The equipped mobs from trial spawners never drop their equipment, and have a safe fall distance of 16 blocks and a water movement efficiency of 0.8. Mobs from the monster spawners carry the NoDrops tag and drop nothing, like all spawner mobs in the pack (see Spawner).
Seven allays are placed in the tower when it generates, along with several bats in the dungeon.
After the Ender Dragon is killed, hostile mobs stop spawning on the surface (see Surface). Abbeys and Trial Chambers are exempt, so mobs keep spawning inside them.[13]
Music
The track "Abbey" by Vee Vaicekauskas replaces the forest background music, so it plays in Forest, Birch Forest, Old Growth Birch Forest and Dark Forest biomes. See Music.

Trivia
- The developer called the Abbey "my first real structure" and said future structures would each revolve "around their own special mechanics. Classic Zelda nonsense."[14]
- The developer originally made Abbeys "as rare as woodland mansions (accidentally)", then made them more common.
- The trial spawner for strays is named "Buff Stay", a misspelling of "stray".
- The advancement description for silver says that most silver deposits "are now harboured in Abbeys".
- The developer's notes plan a full redesign with more surrounding buildings, a proper downstairs entrance and more uses for the copper eye.
- The Abbey was not designed as a source of silver. The developer was already building it when players complained that silver was too hard to find, and chose to put silver in the new structure rather than change how the ore generates.[15] The 1.10 release notes call Abbeys "the bastion of the overworld": bastions provide adamant scrap, Abbeys provide silver.[16]
