A sulfur chunk is a yellow mineral used for explosives, fire and alchemy. It replaces gunpowder: it is mined from sulfur ores as well as dropped by creepers, and it links to the sulfur blocks of the sulfur caves, which can be broken back down into chunks.

Sulfur chunks drop from the pack's sulfur ores: sulfur deposits and sulfurous hellstone (1–2 each), and sulfurous quartz deposits, which also drop quartz. See Ores.

• A block of sulfur crafts into 1 sulfur chunk.
• A block of potent sulfur crafts into 9.

Mob loot

Creepers and ghasts drop sulfur chunks as they drop gunpowder in vanilla. Sulfur cubes, which drop nothing in vanilla, drop 1–2 sulfur chunks and 1–2 sulfur goo when killed by a player.

Chance is the probability that a single chest, mob or catch yields at least one, assuming no Looting, Luck or Fortune.

Sulfur chunks keep every use of gunpowder, and add several of their own:

• TNT: four sulfur chunks with five paper or sand make 2 TNT.
• Benzene: one sulfur chunk with a glass bottle and three hellspore.
• Phosphor: one sulfur chunk, a water bottle and four glow lichen make 8.
• Fire charges: a sulfur chunk, estus ash and coal or charcoal make 4.
• Green dye: a sulfur chunk, raw copper and a water bottle make 2.
• Sulfur blocks: four chunks make 4 blocks of sulfur, and nine chunks (or blocks of sulfur) make a block of potent sulfur.

Picking up a sulfur chunk unlocks these recipes.

History

0.4-alpha	Sulfur was renamed sulfur chunk, with a slightly changed texture. Sulfur chunks work with the new vanilla sulfur blocks. Sulfurous quartz deposits drop both sulfur and quartz.
1.12.1-alpha	The witch loot table no longer drops sulfur chunks.
