A northern pike is a rare ⭐⭐⭐☆ fish caught by fishing in cold freshwater. It cooks into cooked large fish, and a Fisherman buys 4 of them for an Obol.

Obtaining

Fishing

The northern pike can be caught in this table.[1] The chances are per cast of a fishing rod and include the junk and treasure rolls.

Climate Biomes Weight Per catch (open water) Per catch (other water) Per catch (Luck of the Sea III)
Cold freshwater Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks, Grove, Snowy Slopes, Snowy Taiga, Frozen River, Snowy Plains, Ice Spikes, Snowy Beach 3 of 42 6.07% 6.39% 6.29%

The same tables are also rolled by the drops of guardians and elder guardians, using the biome where the mob dies.

Chance is the probability that a single chest, mob or catch yields at least one, assuming no Looting, Luck or Fortune.

Mob drops

Source Stack size Chance Notes
Elder guardian 1 19.9% only in cold freshwater biomes
Guardian 1 4.76% only in cold freshwater biomes

Fishing

Fishing 1 6.07% only in cold freshwater biomes

Usage

Food

Raw fish can be eaten, but it heals nothing: Matcha Flavoured removes hunger, and food only heals through the hearts shown on its tooltip. Cooked, it becomes cooked large fish, which heals 5 ( × 2.5).

The recipes match any minecraft:salmon, so every large fish gives the same result.[2] A Mud Kiln burns it into charred fish instead.

Crafting ingredient

Because it is a salmon underneath, it can be used wherever a raw salmon is accepted: the green curry stock recipe takes any cod or salmon.[3]

Trading

The Fisherman buys 4 caught northern pike for 1 Obol once he reaches Expert level. Only fish with the ⭐⭐⭐☆ rarity line, which the fishing loot tables add, are accepted.[4]

Angler's Almanac

The Angler's Almanac has an entry for the northern pike under Cold Freshwater (listed chance 7.1%), unlocked by catching one after the player has obtained the almanac.[5] Its description reads:

A patient ambush predator that can turn "just a peaceful pond" into a horror movie.

Advancements

  • No More Fish in the Sea – catch every fish, including this one. Rewards 10 Obols.
  • Fishmonger – sell caught fish to a Fisherman.

History

0.5-alpha Fishing overhauled into climates with star-rated fish.
1.10 The Fisherman now buys 4 instead of 8.
1.12.1-alpha Added an Angler's Almanac entry and a catch sound.

The item format changed; fish caught before this version can no longer be sold.

Trivia

  • The fish is a minecraft:salmon item with the name, texture (matcha:northern_pike) and rarity line set by its loot table.[6]
