Wandering Trader

The Wandering Trader is a passive trading mob. In Matcha Flavoured it can be called to the player's base with a Beacon Kindling, and it has new trades: it sells Asylum Seeker applications and village maps, and buys music discs. The developer wanted to make wandering traders "a bit more" useful: "They'll buy music discs, carry maps to nearby villages, but they also have a new item."

Spawning

Placing a Beacon Kindling lights a signal fire and summons a wandering trader next to it:

1. When the kindling is placed, players within 128 blocks see "A Wandering Trader has spotted your beacon, they will arrive in 10 minutes".
2. The pack counts down every 10 seconds. After 10 minutes (60 steps) the trader appears 1 block beside the fire, and players within 128 blocks see "The Wandering Trader has arrived, they will depart in 5 minutes".
3. The trader has its own 5-minute countdown (30 steps). When it runs out, the trader leaves in a puff of smoke and players within 128 blocks see "The Wandering Trader has left". The fire goes out at the same time, 15 minutes (90 steps) after it was lit.

The countdowns run only while the fire or the trader is in a loaded chunk, so they pause while no player is near and survive reloading the data pack and leaving the world. The summoned trader is invulnerable. When it leaves it is teleported 1,000 blocks down before being removed, so it drops nothing.

If the fire is put out or broken before the time is up, players within 128 blocks of it see "The Wandering Trader has lost sight of your beacon..." at the next check and the summon is cancelled; if the trader has already arrived, the summoned trader nearest to the fire leaves.

Each player can light one beacon every 15 minutes, counted from placing it while the player is online; a cancelled beacon doesn't shorten the wait. Placing another kindling during that time shows that player "You have already summoned a Wandering Trader, please wait patiently while they travel"; the second fire stays lit but summons nothing. Different players can call traders at the same time.

Natural spawning

The pack does not change the vanilla game rules for wandering trader spawning, so wandering traders can also appear on their own as in vanilla Minecraft. They use the same trades.

Trades

A wandering trader rolls three sets of trades when it spawns:

• 4 Asylum Seeker applications;
• 6 of the 21 music disc trades;
• 3 of the 6 map trades.

Wandering traders have no levels, so their trades give no villager XP.

The trader buys vanilla music discs for obols. Each trade can be used 999 times.

The trades check only the disc's item type. The pack's own music discs are vanilla disc items underneath (most of them disc 11), so the trader buys them at the price of the vanilla disc they are built on.

Maps

Each map costs 1 obol and can be bought 999 times. The village maps are Minecraft 26.3's village map items under the pack's names.

A map trade is dropped if no such structure lies within 100 chunks. The Swamp Hut Map trade is always dropped: it is still built on an empty map, which Minecraft 26.3 no longer turns into a filled map, so it fails the trade's check for a filled map and the trader draws another map trade instead; in practice a trader offers 3 of the 5 village maps (see Known bugs).

Advancements

• Bonfire Lit: use a Beacon Kindling to signal a Wandering Trader. Rewards 1 obol.
• A Good Samaritan: "Cover the Relocation costs for an Asylum Seeker, and make a home for them here" by buying an Asylum Seeker. Rewards 1 obol.
• God help you... (hidden): kill a villager or a wandering trader.

History

0.5-alpha	Buys music discs.
0.6-alpha	Warding stones heal wandering traders.
1.10	Added the Beacon Kindling to summon it. Pays 5 obols for the Creator disc. Buys up to 6 discs and sells up to 4 Asylum Seekers.
1.12.1-alpha	Asylum Seeker applications are randomized.
1.12.3	When a Beacon Kindling summon is cancelled because no beacon is left and no player is still waiting, the players tagged as summoners now get the "lost sight of your beacon" message.
1.12.7-beta	Traders called with a Beacon Kindling are no longer lost when the data pack reloads, a player leaves the world or the beacon goes out of range. A summoned trader counts down its own 5 minutes instead of leaving with the beacon's timer.
1.12.8-beta October 23, 2026	The five village maps are offered again, and each can be bought 999 times instead of once. They had been built on an empty map, which Minecraft 26.3 no longer turns into a filled map, so the trades were thrown away; the Swamp Hut Map trade still is. The Witch Hut Map is renamed Swamp Hut Map.

Trivia

• The pack reuses the vanilla trade set names: the "buying" set holds the Asylum Seekers the trader sells, and the "common" set holds the discs it buys.
