An echo eel is an epic ⭐⭐⭐⭐ fish caught by fishing in the Deep Dark biome. It cooks into cooked large fish, and a Fisherman buys each one for an Obol.

The echo eel can be caught in this table.[1] The chances are per cast of a fishing rod and include the junk and treasure rolls.

In 1.12.7-beta the biome tables had no weight of their own, so the Deep Dark table was picked for only 1 catch in 16 in open water (1.56% for an echo eel); 1.12.8-beta restored its weight of 85 (see Fishing#Choosing the catch).[2]

The same tables are also rolled by the drops of guardians and elder guardians, using the biome where the mob dies.

Chance is the probability that a single chest, mob or catch yields at least one, assuming no Looting, Luck or Fortune.

Usage

Food

Raw fish can be eaten, but it heals nothing: Matcha Flavoured removes hunger, and food only heals through the hearts shown on its tooltip. Cooked, it becomes cooked large fish, which heals 5 ( × 2.5).

The recipes match any minecraft:salmon, so every large fish gives the same result.[3] A Mud Kiln burns it into charred fish instead.

Crafting ingredient

Because it is a salmon underneath, it can be used wherever a raw salmon is accepted: the green curry stock recipe takes any cod or salmon.[4]

Trading

The Fisherman buys 1 caught echo eel for 1 Obol once he reaches Master level. Only fish with the ⭐⭐⭐⭐ rarity line, which the fishing loot tables add, are accepted.[5]

Angler's Almanac

The Angler's Almanac has an entry for the echo eel under Deep Dark (listed chance 25%), unlocked by catching one after the player has obtained the almanac.[6] Its description reads:

A mysterious eel from the Deep Dark that seems perfectly happy living somewhere every noise sounds ten times scarier.

  • Fishmonger – sell caught fish to a Fisherman.

The item format changed; fish caught before this version can no longer be sold.

1.12.7-beta The Deep Dark no longer adds a second junk entry, but the reworked fishing table makes every biome's fish much rarer (see Fishing#History).[7]

October 23, 2026 		The Deep Dark table weighs 85 again, so an echo eel is 21.25% of open-water catches there instead of 1.56%.[8]

Trivia

  • The fish is a minecraft:salmon item with the name, texture (matcha:echo_fish) and rarity line set by its loot table.[9]
  • Its internal ID is echo_fish.
