Spawning

This is the Matcha Flavoured version of Spawning, renamed or changed from vanilla Minecraft.

Spawning in Matcha Flavoured follows vanilla rules, with three layers of changes: the biome spawn lists are edited so that husks appear everywhere, a check run on every new hostile mob keeps everything but the undead off the open surface of the Overworld, and every hostile mob's attributes are adjusted for the difficulty. After the Ender Dragon is killed, the surface becomes safe from hostile mobs altogether; see Surface.

Biome spawn lists

The pack overrides the spawn lists of the Overworld biomes.[1] Compared to vanilla:

  • Husks are added to every Overworld biome that spawns monsters, with weight 75 in groups of 1–2. In deserts, where husks already spawned, their vanilla weight of 80 in groups of 4 becomes 75 in groups of 1–2.
  • Zombies have weight 100 in almost every biome (vanilla uses 90 or 95). In deserts, zombie weight goes from 19 to 100. Cherry groves spawn zombies in groups of 1–4 instead of 4.
  • The pale garden spawns no monsters at all.
  • Cats spawn as creatures in jungles and sparse jungles, with weight 35 in groups of 1–2.[2]

The Hell and End biomes keep their vanilla spawn lists.

Other changes to natural spawning:

  • Phantoms never spawn, because the spawn_phantoms game rule is turned off.[3]
  • Pillager patrols can't spawn until 360,000 ticks have passed on the Overworld clock, 5 of the pack's longer days (vanilla waits 5 days of 24,000 ticks).[4]
  • Monster rooms spawn their spawners from structure templates, and the mobs from these spawners drop nothing. See Spawner.

Surface check

Every tick, the pack looks for "mundane hostile" mobs it hasn't checked yet: zombies, husks, drowned, zombie villagers, skeletons, strays, bogged, parched, creepers, spiders, cave spiders, slimes, endermen, witches and silverfish.[5] Each one is checked once and then tagged so it isn't checked again.[6] The check applies to any way the mob appeared, including spawners, spawn eggs and zombie reinforcements, not only natural spawns.

Before the Ender Dragon has been killed, the following mobs are removed as soon as they appear:[7]

  • In the Overworld, any listed mob that is not undead and can see the sky. Only zombies, husks, drowned, zombie villagers, skeletons, strays, bogged and parched can appear under the open sky.
  • Any creeper that can see the sky, or that is at Y=63 or above, unless it is inside trial chambers or an abbey.[8] Creepers are therefore limited to caves below sea level.
  • A husk riding a camel husk is replaced by a new husk on foot, leaving the camel husk alone.[9]

After the dragon has been killed, a stricter check replaces this one. See Surface.

Removed mobs are teleported 1,000 blocks down and then killed, so they drop nothing and leave no trace.[7]

Because the check tests whether the mob can see the sky rather than its light level, spiders, endermen, witches and the other non-undead mobs can still appear on the surface wherever the sky is blocked, for example under dense leaves or overhangs. Creepers can't, because of their additional height limit.

Mob modifications

Each mob that passes the surface check is modified according to the difficulty the pack read when the world loaded:[10]

  • On every difficulty, the mob's equipment drop chances are set to 0, and skeletons, creepers, cave spiders, silverfish and baby zombies get new health values.
  • On Normal and Hard, zombies become fast strikers, husks become slow, heavily armored tanks, spiders jump high and leave cobwebs, and skeletons get a Punch bow.

This happens in every dimension, not just the Overworld.

History

0.4-alpha Cave spiders fast with 2 hearts; creepers have 8 hearts.
0.5-alpha Overworld mobs no longer drop equipment they're holding.
0.6-alpha Hostile mob spawning reworked: only the undead spawn in open areas in the Overworld; after the dragon is killed, no hostile mobs spawn above sea level or in open areas.
1.10 Creepers no longer spawn in forests, only underground. Husks spawn in all biomes. The pale garden no longer spawns hostile mobs. Spawn rate of monster rooms increased.
1.12 Husk spawn weight lowered from 80 to 50.
1.12.1-alpha
1.12.2 Mobs spawned from spawners no longer drop anything.

Trivia

  • The developer's reasoning: "Creepers and spiders, they prefer living in caves or forests", while "only undead spawn on the surface now", which together with fast zombies makes night "a really risky proposition".[11]
  • The 1.12.1-alpha notes say drowned need Y=43, but the current code uses Y=63, the same height as the other surface rules.[12]
