A dirt slab is a half-height block of dirt, used for paths and gentle slopes. It takes over the block ID of the vanilla petrified oak slab, an otherwise unobtainable block, and gives it coarse dirt textures.

Three dirt or coarse dirt in a row make 6 dirt slabs, and a stonecutter cuts one dirt into 2.[1][2] Picking up dirt unlocks the recipe.[3]

Two dirt slabs craft back into one block of dirt.

Behavior

  • Dirt slabs are mined fastest with a shovel.[4] As the vanilla petrified oak slab, they are also still mined quickly with a pickaxe.
  • They count as a path block for the Trailblaze enchantment, along with coarse dirt, gravel, dirt paths, packed mud and mud bricks.[5]

Appearance

Placed dirt slabs use four variations of the coarse dirt texture, each at a random rotation, so large areas do not tile visibly.[6] A double dirt slab looks like a block of coarse dirt, which uses the same variations.

History

1.12.1-alpha Dirt slabs are mineable with a shovel.
Trailblaze works on dirt slabs.
Recipe unlocks for dirt slabs, and for dirt from dirt slabs, were fixed.
