The Angler's Almanac is a book sold by the Fisherman. Having it unlocks the Angler's Almanac advancement tab: a catalog of everything that can be caught by fishing, sorted by climate. Each entry appears when its catch is first reeled in. The item and the tab were made by the community contributor Imtlx.[1]

A Novice Fisherman sells the almanac for 1 Obol. The trade has 999 uses and gives the Fisherman 10 experience.[2] Trading

Usage

The almanac is a vanilla book with its own name, texture and tooltip ("Discover the fish that inhabit this world"). It does nothing when used. As soon as it enters the player's inventory, the hidden advancement anglers_almanac/get_almanac fires and grants the root of the almanac tab.[3][4] The tab stays unlocked afterward, even if the book is lost.

The advancement tab

The tab's root can't be earned any other way (its criterion is minecraft:impossible). Once it is granted, the category pages unlock on the next tick. Every entry is hidden until completed and doesn't announce in chat, but shows a toast.[5]

Entries are completed by reeling in the matching item with a fishing rod, and only count while the player already has the tab. Catches from before the almanac was obtained aren't recorded. Each fish entry shows the almanac's flavor description, the fish's rarity and a listed chance within its category. A category's entries are chained from the most common catch to the rarest.

Plain books

The pack's item updater, which runs when the inventory changes, still treats a plain book as an old almanac in one case: while a plain book is in the off hand, a plain book in the main hand is turned into an Angler's Almanac (the whole stack), which also unlocks the tab. The converted almanac lacks the traded one's custom_data, so the two don't stack. See Known bugs.[6][7][8]

Discrepancies

  • The junk category also has entries for a bowl and a tripwire hook, but neither is in the junk table at all, so the tab can't be fully completed.[9][10]
  • The listed chances don't always match the loot tables. The Pale Garden entries list 25% for the Creaking Fish, 71.4% for pale hanging moss and 3.6% for resin clump, but the table gives 17.95%, 51.28% and 30.77%. The junk percentages don't match the current junk table either.[11]
  • The Cool Freshwater biome list leaves out Dark Forest and Old Growth Spruce Taiga, which are in the loot tag.[12]
  • Any bone reeled in completes the Fish Bones entries.

History

1.12.1-alpha Added.
1.12.2 The Warm Saltwater entries and the axolotl entry can be unlocked. In 1.12.1-alpha the Warm Saltwater entries required an almanac root that didn't exist, and the axolotl entry checked for an item ID, axolotl, that doesn't exist.[13][14]
1.12.3 Fixed the Hot Saltwater pufferfish entry, which couldn't be unlocked: it checked for the model matcha:pufferfish, while caught pufferfish keep the vanilla model.[15]
1.12.4 The junk entries other than Fish Bones can no longer be unlocked, because the junk loot table fails to load.[16] The new item updater turned any plain book held in either hand into an Angler's Almanac, which also unlocked the tab.[17][18]
1.12.5 The junk table loads again, so the junk entries can be unlocked, except Fish Bones from junk catches.[19] A plain book is no longer turned into an almanac, except one in the main hand while another plain book is in the off hand.[20][21]
1.12.6-alpha Fish bones from junk catches complete the Fish Bones entry, now that they are bones.[22]
