Fish bones are a fishing junk item. They are a bone with a different name and texture, so they work anywhere a bone does, for example crafting bone meal.

Obtaining

Fishing

  • The junk table lists them at 10 of 78 weight in most biomes (12.82% of junk, about 1.28% of all catches in open water). These come from the loot table matcha:materials/fish_bones.[1][2]
  • 90.91% of the Sulfur Caves table, 77.27% of catches in open water in Sulfur Caves (plus those from the junk table).[3]

Catching fish bones plays their own sound and unlocks the Fish Bones entry of the Angler's Almanac. Fish bones from the junk table carry a custom_data tag (version: 1) that those from Sulfur Caves lack, so the two don't stack with each other.[4][5][6][7] In 1.12.6-alpha and 1.12.7-beta the item updater added the tag to any bone held in either hand, including plain bones; since 1.12.8-beta its only remaining check looks for an item name that no item has, so plain bones and Sulfur Caves fish bones stay as they are.[8]

History

1.12.3 Fish bones from Sulfur Caves now have the correct texture, so they stack with fish bones from the junk table.[9]
1.12.4 Junk fish bones come from their own loot table, matcha:materials/fish_bones. That table gives an ender pearl with the fish bones name and model instead of a bone (see Known bugs).[10] The junk table couldn't be loaded, so they could only be caught in Sulfur Caves.
1.12.5 The junk table loads again, so fish bones can be caught as junk, as ender pearls.[11]
1.12.6-alpha Junk fish bones are bones instead of ender pearls, so they work as a bone, play their catch sound and unlock their Angler's Almanac entry.[12] The item updater turns any held bone without its version tag into fish bones.[13]
1.12.7-beta Fishing junk became much more common (62.5% of open-water catches), so fish bones were caught far more often.
1.12.8-beta
October 23, 2026
The item updater no longer turns plain bones into fish bones. Junk is back to 10% of open-water catches.[14]
