A sack is a portable storage block that keeps its contents when broken. It replaces the shulker box, and unlike its vanilla counterpart it is crafted from sturdy leather and a chest, so it is available from the early game instead of only after reaching The End.

The vanilla recipe, which uses two shulker shells, is removed.[1] Shulker shells themselves are renamed Shakudo Alloy in Matcha Flavoured, so the sack recipe does not involve them at all. The recipe is unlocked by picking up sturdy leather.[2]

Dyed sacks (white, orange, magenta and so on) are made the vanilla way, by crafting a sack with a dye.

Mob loot

Chance is the probability that a single chest, mob or catch yields at least one, assuming no Looting, Luck or Fortune.

Mob drops

Source Stack size Chance Notes
Shulker (entities/shulker) 1 50.0% player kill, Looting increases chance

Block drops

Source Stack size Chance Notes
Shulker box (blocks/shulker_box) 1 100%

Shulkers drop a sack instead of shulker shells. The drop requires a player kill and has a 50% chance, raised by 6.25% per level of Looting (56.25% at Looting I, 62.5% at Looting II, 68.75% at Looting III).[3]

Usage

A sack behaves exactly like a vanilla shulker box: it holds 27 stacks, it keeps its items when broken, and it cannot be placed inside another sack. The container title reads "Sack".

Design

The developer's design video presents early sacks as a deliberate quality-of-life change. Inventory management is one of the early game's main frustrations, and locking the best tool for it behind End cities made the developer feel that the game had to be finished before building could start.[4] The video anticipates the objection that cheap shulker boxes are overpowered, and answers it by asking whether they make the game less fun rather than whether they are powerful.[5]

History

1.0 Shulker boxes were craftable early at the pack's release. The design video released alongside it describes a recipe using a lever and a chest.
1.02 The old recipe was removed, and the current recipe (sturdy leather and a chest) now unlocks properly.

Trivia

  • The introduction video opens by promising to explain "why being able to craft shulkers with a lever and a chest isn't overpowered, actually". The current recipe uses sturdy leather rather than a lever.[6]
  • The block keeps the vanilla shulker box ID (minecraft:shulker_box), so commands and other data treat it as a shulker box.
